Plot Overview
The Strays is a psychological thriller about Neve, a Black woman who has carefully built a perfect, upper-class life in a quiet English suburb. She has a loving husband, two well-mannered children, and a respected position as deputy headmistress at a private school. But beneath this calm surface lies a dark secret from her past — one that begins to resurface when two mysterious strangers appear in her town.
Neve lives a picture-perfect life in a mostly white community, but she feels uneasy and isolated. She hides her racial background and keeps her past buried. One day, she notices two strangers — a young man and woman — who seem to be following her. They appear at her work, her social gatherings, and even near her home, unsettling her.
The strangers start appearing more often, silently watching Neve’s every move. Her friends and family think she’s being paranoid, but the tension grows. Eventually, it’s revealed that these two strangers are her abandoned children, whom she left years ago when she ran away from her previous life to start fresh. They have come back, not just for answers, but to confront her for the pain she caused.
The truth comes crashing down during a tense family dinner when Neve’s two worlds collide — her past family and her present one. Her husband and current children are horrified to learn what she’s done. The film ends ambiguously: Neve flees once again, leaving behind everyone, while her two abandoned children stay behind in her beautiful home, sitting down to breakfast as if they now belong there.
Its ending intentionally leaves viewers questioning whether Neve was a victim of her environment or a creator of her own destruction.
The film is directed by Nathaniel Martello-White.
The Strays combines elements of psychological drama and social horror.
